Emergency Bed Bug Exterminator in Chelsea, NY
You found something. Maybe a bug on the mattress seam, maybe a line of bites you can’t explain. You aren’t sleeping there tonight, and you want someone who can get to Chelsea today. Below: what to do in the next hour, what same-day service involves, and who to tell if you rent.
What to do in the next hour
What you do before anyone arrives can keep one room from becoming three. Most of it is things not to do.
Don't strip the bed
Don't start spraying
Store-bought sprays and foggers rarely kill bed bugs. They push them deeper into walls, outlets and floor gaps, and into neighbouring units. That makes the infestation harder to find and harder to treat.
Don't move to the sofa or another bedroom
Bed bugs follow body heat and the carbon dioxide you breathe out. If you sleep somewhere new, they come with you, and now two rooms are infested. Sleep at a friend’s or in a hotel tonight, and keep your bedding at home.
Don't put the mattress on the kerb yet
Dragging it through the hallway and out of the building drops bugs on the way and sends them into your neighbours’ units. It also removes the evidence you need if the landlord has to authorise treatment. Treatment often makes replacement unnecessary. Wait for the technician’s advice.
Bag what you're taking out, and keep it sealed
Put clothes and anything you need from the room in tied plastic bags, and leave them sealed until you can run them through a dryer on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Don’t pull things out of drawers and carry them through the apartment loosely. Everything you carry out has been in the infested room.
Check that it's bed bugs
Bites alone don’t confirm anything. Mosquitoes, fleas and skin conditions can look identical, and some people don’t react to bed bug bites at all. Look for the signs instead:
- A flat, reddish-brown, oval insect about the size of an apple seed
- Tiny dark specks on the mattress seams or headboard, which are droppings
- Small rust-coloured spots on sheets
- Pale, empty shells the bugs have shed
If you can catch a live one, put it in a sealed jar or tape it to a card. Take a clear photo and have it ready when you call.
Same-day and next-day service in Chelsea
Phones are answered 24/7, and we come the same day when the schedule and the building allow it. If not, the next morning is the realistic target. Chelsea’s buildings are the main constraint on timing:
- Postwar high-rises. Many have doormen, service elevator bookings and set move-in or contractor hours. Some managing agents want paperwork, such as proof of insurance, before a contractor goes up. Ask your building office now, not when we arrive.
- Walk-ups above ground-floor retail. There's no lift, so everything is carried up by hand. Narrow stairwells and shared entrances with the shop below can slow the visit.
- Prewar loft conversions. Large open floors, high ceilings and old floorboards give bugs plenty of places to hide, so inspections can take longer. Freight elevators may need booking in advance.
Across all three, an after-hours visit may not be possible if the building won’t let a contractor in. If a landlord or managing agent has to authorise entry, that approval is the step most likely to turn “today” into “tomorrow.” Start that request while you’re waiting for us.
What a first emergency visit can do
A first visit can confirm what you have, find where the bugs are, treat the areas where they’ve been found, and set up the plan for what follows. You’ll also get clear instructions on what to launder, bag and leave alone.
A first visit can’t end an infestation. Bed bugs hide in places a single pass can’t reach, and eggs hatch after the visit. You may still see bugs or get bitten for days afterwards, and a full treatment and follow-up come after the emergency visit. We’ll also need to check the units next to, above and below you, which requires access to those units.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sleep at home tonight?
We’d advise against it. Sleeping there feeds the bugs and makes them more likely to spread. Stay somewhere else, and don’t take bedding with you.
Should I wash everything now?
Not before we’ve looked. Bag items are sealed and wait for instructions, so nothing gets carried through the apartment and spread.
Will the bites stop as soon as you've been?
Not always. Bugs that survive can still bite, and skin reactions can last days after the last bite.
Do I have to throw out my furniture?
Usually not. Don’t discard anything until a technician has looked at it.
Can you come at night?
You can call any time, day or night. Night arrival depends on whether the building will let us in.Call (646) 444-0895
If you rent
Tell your landlord or managing agent today, in writing. Email or text works. Include the date and time you found the bugs, which room, and your photos. Written notice creates a record, and it’s the fastest way to get the building moving, because in New York the landlord is generally responsible for treating a rental.
Ask for written confirmation of when pest control will come. If you don’t hear back, send a follow-up and keep copies of everything. If the building still doesn’t respond, you can file a housing complaint through 311.
Also tell your neighbours. Bed bugs travel through walls, pipes and shared hallways, and treating one unit won’t hold if the next one isn’t treated.
